UIUC Chemistry FacultyUIUC Chemistry Faculty is committed to teaching students in an atmosphere of mutual respect and mutual curiosity. Their objective is to provide you with the foundational knowledge that will help you become a successful chemical engineer.There are five areas of concentration that comprise the Chemistry Faculty at UIUC. These areas are Molecular & Cell Biology, Environmental Engineering, Physical Sciences, Biochemistry, and Molecular Structure. All of these focus on the underlying concepts of chemistry, and use a variety of methods to teach chemistry.You can take classes either in your major or on the parallel tracks. The major does not require parallel tracks, but many times you will want to transfer your coursework to another department. Also, the parallel tracks offer a good way to move beyond the basics of learning chemistry.The primary goal of the UIUC Chemical Engineering Department is to promote professionalism and excellence. We believe in mutual respe ct, mutual understanding, and mutual curiosity. These values are taught in a variety of ways, one of which is the laboratories, where students can study chemistry under the guidance of the faculty. All students, whether majoring in Chemistry or another major, should be involved in the labs.Some of the topics that are taught by the Chemistry Faculty include: Fundamental Aspects of Organic Chemistry, Chemical Reactions, Ion Channels, Molecular Systems, Atomic Bonding, Chemistry of Amines, Biochemistry, Metals, Nanoscale Systems, and other topics as assigned by the department. Topics can be chosen individually or will incorporate chemistry information into a semester-long elective.For those students who wish to take their degree on their own, the Chemistry Faculty has several resources to assist them. There are often labs set up by the department and other laboratories run by the student and the department. Usually the labs are small in size, and they focus on specific areas of chemist ry. Students may choose to take general chemistry courses, as well as lab courses that help them better understand chemistry.Most Chemistry Faculty programs consist of a semester of lab work and another semester of lecture. During the first semester, students will focus on fundamentals of chemistry and will learn laboratory skills. The second semester, students will focus on a specific type of chemistry and will be introduced to different theories and types of chemical reactions.Most of the faculty are highly qualified and award winning chemists. The staff consists of professors, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. Due to the longevity of the faculty, students typically have a four year degree program.

Bilingual Program Bilingual Program What is the Bilingual.hu Program? We are a private, non-profit, tuition-based educational enterprise operating in Hungarian state educational institutions. As such, we are a public-private partnership that has been providing unique educational opportunities to hundreds of Hungarian families since 2001. What does Bilingual.hu teach? We operate our nationally accredited program in three primary schools and two kindergartens in Budapest and its environs. According to a recent study, a mere 20 minutes of Hatha Yoga practice  significantly  improved participants (a group of female undergraduate students) speed and accuracy of recall on memory tests, providing them with a heightened ability to retain information and maintain focus. A common sequence of poses in Hatha Yoga is the Sun Salutation, and consists of various, flowing poses that incorporate partial inversions that direct blood flow to the brain.  This sequence is excellent to perform during those mornings when you need to get your blood flowing without having to leave your apartment or dorm. Its known to provide maximum extension of the spine, increasing elasticity and increasing the flow of fresh, oxygen-rich blood to the brain, and can be done following the sun salutation. However, since most of us probably arent advanced yogis, it would be best to use a wall to rest your feet on while you hold the pose. Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art that focuses on slow, meditative movements, has been shown in a study conducted by the University of South Florida to increase brain volume and improve mental activity, and may even delay the onset of Alzheimers disease. In the tai chi group, we saw brain growth of one-half of 1 percent over eight months, said James Mortimer, lead researcher and USF professor of epidemiology and biostatistics  in an interview. Like yoga, tai chi is a low impact and continuously-flowing exercise requiring heightened mental awareness. Many scientists speculate that this mental engagement may be the reason for their significant impact on the brain. High-Intensity Interval Training Photo courtesy of swide.com Commonly referred to as HIIT,  this type of training is high-impact and involves alternating bouts of high-intensity exercise followed by a rest period, which is repeated for a short duration, typically 20 to 30 minutes, or even as little as 8 to 10 depending on how hard youre working.  An example would be similar to a Tabata workout (a form of HIIT), where you would perform 20 seconds of all-out intense exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for eight rounds. High-intensity exercise triggers the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophic factor that plays an important role in the survival of neurons and synapse plasticity.  In a study involving high-intensity exercise and BDNF, researchers found that,  vocabulary learning was 20 percent faster after intense physical exercise as compared to the other two conditions. This condition also elicited the strongest increases in BDNF and catecholamine levels. The other two conditions within the study were low-impact running and rest, which essentially portrays high-intensity exercise as superior to low-intensity exercise in terms of cognitive improvement and learning performance. However, you may be wondering how this is possible due to the positive studies cited above mentioning the benefits of low-impact exercises on brain power and memory, which are seemingly contradictory; the bottom line is, while high-intensity exercise releases BDNF, low-intensity exercise like weight training releases an insulin like growth factor, which promotes neural survival in ways high-intensity exercise doesnt. Brain health seems to be more of a balancing act than a cut-and-dry system, which is why it is recommended to include a mixture of the previous exercises in order to reap optimal brain-boosting effects (just as long as this mixture doesnt constitute attempting to consume coffee while performing the Feathered Peacock Pose).

No Worries!

No Worries! I had been out of touch with my good friends at TutorZ for a few years now. It was a great experience working with those guys but, with school ending and my internship ending, it seemed like a good time to move on. Now and again I would regret going separate ways, because the folks that developed and create TutorZ.com were good people and I missed them sometimes. But, I already had a job and circumstances seemed to place me elsewhere. But they were good times up there being involved in helping get this great idea off the ground. Well, life goes on. I occasionally would receive a newsletter from TutorZ in my inbox, but would just delete it as those days were over and it felt kind of sad. Of course I wished them great success, but somehow I felt sad moving on. Time passes and a few years later everything in my life had change. The job I had for many years was ending, by my choice, as I worked for greedy people who had no interest in the well-being of others really. Just profit, profit, profit. I have nothing against money but I have seen people work that had human kind on their mind as well. I may seem a little sentimental and unrealistic but not so. It is easy to get jaded and cynical and caught up in the let me get mine mind set. How much do you need? More was always the answer. Looking back at TutorZ, there was an example of people thinking, what can we create that would be useful and helpful to many people that would cause no harm to others? Well TutorZ did it, a service which helps to connect students and tutors in a simple inexpensive way. This kind of positive healthy thinking was an attraction to me back then. And they did it. TutorZ was moving along building momentum with little to no real major marketing maneuvers. Just by word of mouth TutorZ was growing. So, one day, last summer, I opened my email and there was a new Newsletter from TutorZ.com. For no special reason I decided to click “open” instead of “delete” and the first thing that caught my eye was a video. The image was of my old friend and boss Dirk and his girlfriend Lilly. The title read “Sightseeing in Dubai”. Well now I’m hooked in, I had to watch it. Who wouldn’t want to go to Dubai, the playground for the wealthy? I was amazed at how tightly put together this video was, including the music. I enjoyed it so much that I sent an email to TutorZ sending best wishes to Dirk and the crew. A few days go by and I’m in my office at home. I am applying for jobs that I could do from my own home now. I’ve had some physical challenges for a long time but now they were much worse and I decided that I would take pressure off myself by finding a decent job where I didn’t have to sit on the freeway for hours and drag myself into the office every day. Then the phone rings. It’s Dirk. Wow. How are you? What’s going on? It was great to talk with him after all those years had gone by. We got caught up a bit, and before I knew it I was offered a telecommuting job with TutorZ. I could not tell you how excited I was. This really seemed to come out of thin air to me. But actually it came out of a DSL line. I really enjoy the idea of being back with the TutorZ gang and helping to move it forward. TutorZ has always been a forward thinking company. My duties and responsibilities have grown and I am growing with it. I must say that I could not come up with a subject that doesn’t have a tutor to help you with. Mathematics, English, Science, Engineering, Sports, caring for yourself physically and emotional, It’s all here. The diversity and spectrum of people I deal with is wonderful. Especially my coworkers at TutorZ. Like the kids use to say; “It’s all good!” And if your struggling with a course at school, like the kids say now; ”No worries”,   TutorZ is here! No Worries! Focus on verbal: The GMAT is just way too big to take it all on at once, although studies indicate that the brain works best when it connects and relates information, as opposed to processing it one-by-one. Although, the GMAT doesnt require any previous subject knowledge for these sections, you should still be well-versed in them. You will need to understand relationships between concepts and tone, draw inferences, recall facts and analyze terms or quantitative facts in the passages. Science passage questions are usually factual, social science questions are inferential and business questions which are the most difficult ask for tone or the opinion of the author. Its best to read the first and last few sentences to get a basic understanding of the passage. You just need to be able to say: okay this is a business passage about a guy named Bill Gates who developed computer softwareand boom you know to look for tone/opinion (because its a business passage). Then read the questions, and skim the entire passage to look for your answers. Critical reasoning: These are basically mini-comprehension reading questions. You will be given a brief paragraph and asked to evaluate the argument, strengthen/weaken it, identify an assumption, inference or parallel argument or choose a plan of action. Read the questions first to know what youre looking for. You may even want to guess an answer from the questions; then read the passage to confirm your answer. Try to work backwards and insert answers into the passage. Do not always choose an answer that is correct (in real life), but rather answers that are extensions of the passage. This is a common trap. Avoid answers that are absolutes because absolutes rarely exist in arguments, and avoid emotionally-charged answers. Look for words to indicate the conclusion, such as: consequently, hence, as a result of, therefore, because of, ultimately, in conclusion, etc because you will find most of your answers in that sentence. A lot of questions will ask you to weaken an argument; so simply look for: circular reasoning, inaccurate cause-and-effect arguments, sweeping generalizations and unqualified expert opinions. Sentence correction: Its grammar time. Here, you will see sentences with parts of them underlined. You will be given four options for rewriting the underlined section, and one option that repeats it (always answer choice A). Save time by never reading answer choice A because you just read it in the sentence. There may be multiple errors. Do not look for spelling/capitalization; test makers never ask for that. After you choose an answer, read the entire sentence again with your answer and trust your ear. Here are common grammar rules you should know: among versus between, elliptical verb phrases, misplaced modifiers, parallel sentences, pronoun-subject agreement, proper use of adverbs (they modify verbs), proper use of the semicolon, fewer versus less, run-on sentences, sentence fragments, subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, who versus whom, etc. Read a lot: Your reading speed, comprehension and grammar skills will improve dramatically. While youre preparing, cut a couple hours of leisure time out of your day and just read instead. Vocabulary: You need a solid vocab, but unlike the SAT/ACT you wont need a Shakespearian-level vocab. Practice: Once you feel comfortable with the basic structures and tips, take a practice test. You should be more concerned with identifying problematic areas than your score. Then, practice individual questions off the clock with your tutor to increase your speed and accuracy. And finally, take another timed practice test and continue this process until youre satisfied with your score. Know your pace: You have to answer 41 questions in 75 minutes, which gives you less than 2 minutes per question. If youre taking more time early on in the test, youre going to have to speed it up or even start guessing. Always finish the section: There is a penalty, estimated to be as high as 30-50 points, for not finishing the section. And, if you blindly guess on the last few questions, the test will know and penalize you. So, pace is the most important preparation technique. I hate to admit this, but I like feeling important in my job.  How can I feel that way if I retire or change jobs? We really don’t like admit that we have an ego to feed: a lot of us have one. We keep it undercover most of the time because it can be kind of an ugly thing that no one, including ourselves, likes to see.  A number of us who have been in the workforce for a while have developed expertise and deep knowledge that people seek us out for.  Sometimes this is an informal situation but real all the same. In other work, settings can even be part of a job title.  Whichever it is, it is a source of power and deep personal gratification.  It isn’t something that you are awarded simply by passing tests or being licensed.  You have earned this because of the person you are.  You dig into details, you learn how things work, and you ask questions.  You do what other people don’t. It’s okay to admit that this situation has provided you with great satisfaction.  It’s also good to acknowledge that this same level of admiration most likely won’t be repeated if you change jobs or quit altogether.  It’s a hard thing to deliberately walk away from and can be a big part of your anxiety in making a change in your life.  This is when you must make “values-based decisions” about what’s important in your life.   This calls for a writing exercise.   You need to write down what you like, what you dislike and what’s missing about your current job.  If you really are on the brink of a life change, self-examination is always called for.  The exercise is also not a 5-minute meal.  You will set down and write these things out, think about them, walk away from them, and pick them up a few more times before you have really captured what’s important and what’s MOST important in your life.  You have to ask yourself the tough questions or have someone ask them of you.   Questions like:  What is important in your life going forward? Let’s also examine this term “values-based decisions”.  A value is something you personally value in yourself, your life, and probably people you like and respect.  One example of a value is honesty.  I personally can’t function or interact with someone I don’t trust.  We all have a lengthy list of values.  Sometimes we don’t even realize what all of our values are, yet they are the basis for much of our behavior.  It is also important to understand that in this lengthy list of values we possess,  some can be in conflict with each other.  I know it seems incongruous but it is true.  You can value being in nature and city life at the same time.  You can value being sought after and even admired for your deep knowledge and background in your field and yet not want to do it anymore.  When you make a “values-based decision” such as this it will be hard work.  It will require thought, examination, and consideration for what is important in your life.  It is al so possible that what is important to you today will change next week or next year.  If you go through this exercise and decide to stay where you just know that there will come a day when the list starts shifting.  It’s a natural process that goes on in our life.  If you decide to move forward and leave the job you have today, you also have to face the fact that this important aspect of your life will be something that you will miss and maybe even grieve for a while.  But, as a member of the human race, you will adjust and your life going forward will be great.
