UIUC Chemistry FacultyUIUC Chemistry Faculty is committed to teaching students in an atmosphere of mutual respect and mutual curiosity. Their objective is to provide you with the foundational knowledge that will help you become a successful chemical engineer.There are five areas of concentration that comprise the Chemistry Faculty at UIUC. These areas are Molecular & Cell Biology, Environmental Engineering, Physical Sciences, Biochemistry, and Molecular Structure. All of these focus on the underlying concepts of chemistry, and use a variety of methods to teach chemistry.You can take classes either in your major or on the parallel tracks. The major does not require parallel tracks, but many times you will want to transfer your coursework to another department. Also, the parallel tracks offer a good way to move beyond the basics of learning chemistry.The primary goal of the UIUC Chemical Engineering Department is to promote professionalism and excellence. We believe in mutual respe ct, mutual understanding, and mutual curiosity. These values are taught in a variety of ways, one of which is the laboratories, where students can study chemistry under the guidance of the faculty. All students, whether majoring in Chemistry or another major, should be involved in the labs.Some of the topics that are taught by the Chemistry Faculty include: Fundamental Aspects of Organic Chemistry, Chemical Reactions, Ion Channels, Molecular Systems, Atomic Bonding, Chemistry of Amines, Biochemistry, Metals, Nanoscale Systems, and other topics as assigned by the department. Topics can be chosen individually or will incorporate chemistry information into a semester-long elective.For those students who wish to take their degree on their own, the Chemistry Faculty has several resources to assist them. There are often labs set up by the department and other laboratories run by the student and the department. Usually the labs are small in size, and they focus on specific areas of chemist ry. Students may choose to take general chemistry courses, as well as lab courses that help them better understand chemistry.Most Chemistry Faculty programs consist of a semester of lab work and another semester of lecture. During the first semester, students will focus on fundamentals of chemistry and will learn laboratory skills. The second semester, students will focus on a specific type of chemistry and will be introduced to different theories and types of chemical reactions.Most of the faculty are highly qualified and award winning chemists. The staff consists of professors, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. Due to the longevity of the faculty, students typically have a four year degree program.
